IPv4 Transfer Pricing

IPv4 Market Group is an IP broker that facilitates the transfer of IP address blocks from IPv4 sellers to IPv4 buyers.

  • 660 - IPv4 transactions completed by IPv4 Market Group
  • These 660 transactions moved 40 Million IPs transferred since 2011
  • The value of these 40 million IPs was over $485 Million USD in IPs sold
  • Listed broker in RIPE, ARIN and APNIC regions

Since the inception of the IPv4 market, there has been speculation about how high the price of IPv4 addresses will go. We decided to split our IPv4 price analysis into two pieces: /16 and larger, and /17 and smaller.

The larger blocks show a deeper bottom at ~$5 per IP in 2015, followed by a quite linear rise to $23 per IP for /16s, and $26 per IP for very large blocks, by the end of 2020. The smaller blocks did not linger at $5/IP and rose quickly to $20 per IP by 2018, where they plateaued for 18 months before rising of late to $38-40 per IP. We believe that rising prices are driven by an excess of demand over supply. An interesting analysis by APNIC’s Chief Scientist Geoff Huston found, however, that “The aggregate total of addresses in the transfer logs since 2012 is some 150 million addresses, or the equivalent of 9 /8s, which is some 4% of the total delegated IPv4 address space of 3.7 billion addresses.”

Global Size of the IPv4 Market Place

The chart above shows the IPs transferred through the RIR’s on a global basis. Total volume is driven by large transfers, consisting of /12s and larger. This has plateaued at almost 70 million IPs transferred each year from 2017 to 2019.

IP Address Prices | The IPv4 Market Group Expertise

IPv4 Market Group has been in business since 2011, and thus has extensive experience and expertise in IPv4 pricing. Our company president, Sandra Brown, was previously the Director of Engineering at Nortel, where she arranged the first publicized commercial IPv4 transfer from Nortel to Microsoft in 2011. Prices at that time were at the $11-12 per IP range for large blocks. After 2011, as the market established and prices fell, going as low as $5 USD per IP, before beginning a steady climb to the IPv4 price levels we have today.
