Since the inception of the IPv4 market, there has been speculation about how high the price of IPv4 addresses will go. We decided to split our IPv4 price analysis into two pieces: /16 and larger, and /17 and smaller.
The larger blocks show that the prices for most block sizes rose to over $50 per IP, followed by a steep decline starting mid 2023. Prices for /16s or larger may still be $43-52/IP, depending on the situation. Prices for /17s or smaller seem to be $35-42/IP. With this rapid drop in pricing, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact price at a point in time. It is unknown whether the curve has bottomed out.
The chart above shows the IPs transferred through the RIRs on a global basis. Total volume is driven by large transfers, consisting of /12s and larger. This has plateaued at almost 70 million IPs transferred each year from 2017 to 2019. There were a handful of large corporations receiving many transfers for large blocks in 2022 to 2023, which helps account for the spike in transfer volumes during this time.
IPv4 transactions are often conducted in US Dollars but can be transacted in Euros, GBP, Canadian dollars, or other currencies, when appropriate.
